The tastiest local produce from our region

Doing sports and enjoying delicious local produce at the same time? Then follow our route and discover organic Amersfoort. Whether you are a lover of cheese, organic fruits and vegetables or home-brewed beer. Everything is covered!

1. Het Lokaal

It doesn't get any more local than this! The Local is a restaurant and store full of local products. Here they bake their own bread, roast coffee and brew their own beer. Stop by for freshly baked (sourdough) bread. This bread is baked by De Nieuwe Stadsbakkers. They bake the best sourdough bread in the Netherlands. So judged the jury at the National Sourdough Bread Tasting.

Also try a cup of Boot Coffee. This coffee comes from coffee farmers in developing countries, who have received a fair price for it. Boot Koffie values personal contact and believes in long-term relationships, both with coffee drinkers and suppliers. This is why the name of the coffee farmer in question is prominently displayed on the labels of the coffee.

Or sit back and enjoy a home-brewed beer. They now brew 'Ik ben van Bier' together with Eembier and have selected their own Johanitter with Betuws Wijndomein as New Town Wine!

Het Lokaal is open from Tuesday to Sunday. On these days you can have breakfast, lunch and get your weekly groceries here. Chef Peter cooks a very cool vegan dinner from Wednesday through Saturday!

2. Country Store and Schenkerij The Chestnut Tree

This (h)honest place, in edge of Amersfoort, is very easy to reach by bike. Here you can recover from the bike ride and pamper yourself with a cup of cappuccino made with farm milk. And of course some goodies! For example, a homemade turban with Achterhoekse jam and farmhouse whipped cream, or pastries from the local confectioner.

As the name suggests, De Kastanjeboom is also a country store. Here you can choose from a wide range of products from the region. Such as, for example, the Boerenkazen. But what exactly is the difference with 'normal' cheese?

The preparation method of Boerenkaas is different from all other cheeses. The milk comes directly from the cow, so it is super fresh and has not undergone any heat treatment. This is called 'raw' milk, this is milk in its purest form. As a result, all the taste characteristics of the milk are preserved. That is exactly what gives Boerenkaas the characteristic, full and powerful flavor that is unique for Boerenkaas.

The specialty of De Kastanjeboom is 'scone cream', this is the Dutch version of the English 'clotted cream'. Marijke, who owns De Kastanjeboom with her husband John, makes the scone cream herself every week. They are unique in the Netherlands with this product. Hence, people from all over the Netherlands drop by to taste this dairy delicacy.

3. Country Store & Cheese Farm The Copper Mill.

Still not tired of cheese? Nicely done! At The Copper Mill you can get lost among the homemade cheeses from our own cow. The cheeses are made and processed on location. It doesn't get any fresher than this. They find the welfare of the cows most important. The barn is animal-friendly furnished with comfortable water beds. In summer the cows are out in the meadow grazing the fresh grass. The cheeses are made and processed on location.

The location of De Kopermolen is fantastic. On the terrace you can enjoy a beautiful and green view. Is it raining? Not to worry, there is always the covered terrace. Drink a cup of coffee or tea with a piece of cake from our own kitchen. You can also enjoy lunch here, such as a homemade sandwich, a muesli roll with cheese or raisin bread with butter.

4. The New Granary

The last stop on this bike tour is at De Nieuwe Graanschuur, in the heart of Amersfoort. De Nieuwe Graanschuur is a store selling organic products that come mostly from the region. They are committed to selling low packaging products. So that less packaging material needs to be produced and thrown away. So be sure to stop by with your own bag, tray or bottle!

For those who need something quickly, or for the novice 'refiller', there are also bags, trays and bottles for sale on site. They are also happy to give you tips on how to reduce waste yourself.

Local caterers prepare takeaway meals daily. In these meals they incorporate surplus or produce that is of perfect quality but does not quite meet the beauty ideals of a supermarket. These products might otherwise have ended up on the compost pile. In this way, they combat waste while putting together a delicious and healthy meal.

By the way, you can also consume the meals and products in the store itself.
