I have plenty of city trips planned for me again this summer. But what I often forget is that it is also great fun to visit cities in my own country. I tend to skip those when I go on vacation abroad. The Netherlands can really surprise me. And whether I feel like a romantic getaway or a weekend with friends, Amersfoort is a cozy city that I can recommend to everyone. As a local, I know the most beautiful places to find. And in this article I like to tell you what a citytrip to Amersfoort can look like.

Day 1 / 8 p.m., a lovely hotel

When I go on a city trip, I make sure I head to my destination as early as Friday evening. The next morning I can then immediately start my outing(s). In Amersfoort there are several hotels. Stay for example at Hotel NH Amersfoort or Mercure hotel. Although my ultimate tip is hotel de Tabaksplant.

Hotel the Tobacco Plant

Hotel de Tabaksplant offers both basic and comfort rooms, depending on your needs. What is special is that they also have a number of single rooms. You don't see this very often! Further also nice about this hotel, is that it is suitable for tall people. They have beds of 2.20 m instead of 2.10 m. So your feet are finally in the bed instead of outside it. Although, with my 1.63 m, I fit into almost any bed.

Day 2 / 10:00 a.m., slept out looking for breakfast

Sleeping in is one of the things I like to do when I go away for a few days. My life is normally quite hectic, and during a weekend away I allow myself to relax completely. I often choose to stay longer and have breakfast in town. Maybe the same goes for you? At hotspot 30ML you can have a nice breakfast with a good cup of coffee. The - whole - day!

Day 2 / 11:00 a.m., art & lunch

After this tasty breakfast, you'll probably feel like exploring the city further. As an art lover myself, I like to visit Kunsthal KAdE. Here they have varying exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.

After this, stop by Blur your life for a delicious lunch. Besides being a lunchroom, Blur your life is also my go-to place for cool gifts. How fun is it to buy a memento of your weekend away? At least that's something I do by default and which makes my house full of fun stuff.

Day 2 / 6 p.m., FIER the life!

Is your stomach rattling again? Then it's time for a delicious dinner, such as at Hotel de Tabaksplant. They have set up a fantastic collaboration, as they have made the terrace available to Bistro 't Bloemendaeltje.

Especially with the sunshine, it's great to linger on the terrace. Taste the beautiful dishes and discover live cooking in good company. That's what you experience there from Thursday to Saturday evenings (weather permitting).

Day 2 / 9:00 p.m., time for drinks

Do you still have energy left? Then you'll probably want to have a drink on a terrace somewhere. There are several squares in Amersfoort with nice terraces: Hof and Lieve Vrouwekerkhof. My favorite place is still Alberts. And if it's cold and wet outside, you can sit inside with some goodies and a glass of wine.

Day 3 / 10:00 a.m., eating a healthy breakfast

Maybe you made it late? I imagine you had a pleasant evening and therefore didn't get up early. Maybe you get in the shower first and then look for a place to have breakfast.

Most stores on Langestraat and its side streets are open from 12:00 noon, but before then you can enjoy a delicious petit-déjeuner. Were you at 30ML yesterday? Then stop by Coffee Corazon today. This is pre-eminently the place to unwind and enjoy organic food. And the name says it all: the coffee here is super!

Day 3 / 12:00 a.m., strolling around the city

While you're in downtown anyway, you'll probably enjoy taking a stroll through the city. From Corazon Coffee you can walk in a few minutes to one of Amersfoort's highlights: the still-existing city gate Kamperbinnenpoort. From there, you can easily make your way to the Muurhuizen.

The Muurhuizen should really be on your list. The diversity of medieval-style houses are special to see.

Muurhuizen and the Kamp

Every time I walk past Muurhuizen, I imagine myself back in the days of yore. Will you also stop by the Dieventoren at number 97? This was a city jail until the 19th century!

Day 3 / 2 p.m., lunch and hike

Time for lunch? On the edge of downtown, you'll find BUUF in the Greenhouse. This place you'll want to visit if you're a fan of cake, a good cup of coffee and a tasty lunch. Not tired of walking yet? Then head from Plantsoen Oost to Plantsoen Noord to end at another highlight: the Koppelpoort.

Tip: fancy a walk past all the hotspots? Then check out the blog Amersfoort: the most photogenic city in the Netherlands, including a photo route through Amersfoort.

Day 3 / 6 p.m., a delicious dinner

Tasty treats before you have to hit the road again? My new favorite place is WestSingel. Inside it is hip and modern. If you prefer to sit outside in the warm weather, sit out on the terrace.

Westsingel Restaurant

Be overwhelmed by a delicious luxury dinner, where all the dishes are a surprise. You provide your dietary requirements in advance and in response you will be served a spectacular dinner. For me, it felt like I was dining in a starred restaurant, so beautifully were all the dishes prepared. You can also lounge here. With a nice drink and street food.

Is it time to go home now? Not to worry! You can always come back to discover even more of Amersfoort, whether for a weekend or longer. Feel welcome!
