The Gullspång Miracle

Take a look in advance

A seemingly divine premonition leads Norwegian sisters Kari and May to buy an apartment in the small Swedish town of Gullspång. A seemingly divine premonition leads Norwegian sisters Kari and May to buy an apartment in the small Swedish town of Gullspång. To their surprise, salesman Olaug looks surprisingly like their older sister Astrid, who committed suicide thirty years earlier. What is even stranger is that this doppelganger used to be called "Lita," the same nickname as their deceased sister. Who is this Olaug and what is going on here?

A DNA test reveals that Olaug is a full sister to Kari and May. At this point, director Maria Frederiksson is called in. Would she want to delve into the miracle? At the time, Frederiksson had no idea what she would dig up, but the resulting story is documentary gold. To say that truth is stranger than fiction would be a huge understatement when talking about The Gullspång Miracle. The story takes twists and turns that would make even a soap opera story too implausible: hidden twins, foster children, Nazis, embezzlement, police incompetence, religious fanaticism, family feuds and possibly an unsolved murder all play their part. The documentary is further aided by the characters involved in this story, who move at such ease in front of the camera that it is as if they were cast.

Combining dramatic re-enactments with archival footage, The Gullspång Miracle weaves a true crime story into a unique tale of a family struggling with loss and deception and becomes an exploration not only of how we tell stories, but also of how we choose what to believe. For the family, the desire to define their own truths becomes more important than knowing what is really true.
