Every year, funny, intrepid Louise spends her summer vacation on a beach in Brittany among happy families. This time she accidentally misses the last train of the season, which means she will have to spend the winter there.

Suddenly elderly Louise is the only person left in the town. She does not worry, because she assumes that one of her children will start to miss her and come to pick her up. Quietly she builds a cabin on the beach, and as winter draws ever closer, Louise retains a wonderful summer feeling. Having grown up in the area, she recalls many traumatic childhood memories. At her leisure, she rediscovers the area and gathers her own food. Slowly but surely, Louise embraces aging and the approaching end. But at the same time, she feels more alive than ever before.

Louise en Hiver is a beautiful, hand-drawn, animated film. French Jean-François Laguionie (b. 1939) directed this ode to life, to aging and to surrender. The film received a Lumiere nomination for best animated film. He previously made L'Ile De Black Mor (2004) and the animated short La traversée de l'Atlantique à la rame (1978), which won the award for best short film at the Cannes Film Festival, among others.
