The film is based on a true story that struck director Laura Hermanides when she heard the parents tell their story on TV in 2013. She sought contact with the parents and that led to several meetings. At first Hermanides thought she wanted to make a documentary about their story, but in the end she opted for a feature film because, as she says, this way she could better show the struggle between reason and instinct.
