Architecture of Film #2 - Set Design

Take a look in advance

For films, entire houses, cities, worlds are literally created from scratch. Often it is also just the facade of a building or the single corner of a street: set pieces that are supposed to suggest complete places and spaces while consisting of only a single wall.

That - and much more - makes set design a distinct form of architecture, which always seeks dialogue with the narrative techniques of the film medium. And how does set design relate to the use of existing locations? What difference does it make to the viewer's experience to know that a film space "really" exists?
