From washtub to wadi; water connecting the neighborhood | District Museum Soesterkwartier

From May 1 to October 5, the Wijkmuseum Soesterkwartier in Amersfoort will host the exhibition Van wastobbe tot wadi; water that connects the neighborhood. The exhibition focuses on the role that water has played throughout the centuries in and for the Soesterkwartier neighborhood: water in the home, work on the water, disappeared and existing water, recreation on the water and flooding through the ages.

The exhibition features special historical photographs and maps, objects from the collection of the Wijkmuseum and Museum Flehite, documentation from the Archives Eemland and, in addition, a visual representation especially for the exhibition; a neighborhood genesis, made from the soil and water under the neighborhood.

The exhibition begins in the Museum House where the history of water in the former workers' cottage is told through a number of objects. How did they do laundry, how did residents wash themselves and children, how was cleaning done in the 1930s to 1950s. Also on display are the plans for the bathhouse, which never came to the neighborhood. But the history of water in the Soesterkwartier goes back much longer. Through centuries, water has played an important role in and for the neighborhood.

At one time the present neighborhood was the wettest place to be found near medieval Amersfoort. In the swampy area you often got your feet wet. Meanwhile, it has long since ceased to be so and residents regularly suffer from flooding and drought. The neighborhood genesis created especially for "From washtub to wadi" offers insight into the causes. The exhibition also devotes attention to the major work projects of the last century: the construction of the park belt, the forest pond and the forest pool. Water as a source of entertainment and relaxation is also discussed.

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive fringe program of lectures, workshops and teaching materials for schools. With this project, the District Museum joins the theme of Water, which more Amersfoort cultural institutions have chosen as the starting point for activities this year.
