Exhibition "On the Gein" will show from June 15, 2024 the beauty of the landscape around this small river as seen through the eyes of Piet Mondrian, Annemieke Harkema, Anna Khodorovich and others.

Between Driemond and Abcoude flows the Gein, a small river about six kilometers long. It meanders through an archetypal Dutch landscape of water and meadows, farms and windmills. It is a special area, where Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) could often be found at the beginning of his artistic career. The artist regularly went out by bicycle to sketch and paint along the Gein. The landscape just outside Amsterdam constantly inspired the still young painter to experiment with color, light and composition.

The Gein continues to inspire painters and photographers today, each in their own way capturing the nature and atmosphere of this beautiful part of the Netherlands. The exhibition Aan het Gein in the Mondriaanhuis this summer shows the beauty of the river as seen through the eyes of Piet Mondrian, as well as Annemieke Harkema, Anna Khodorovich and other contemporary artists and photographers.

About Annemieke Harkema
As early as the age of six, Annemieke Harkema (1958) received drawing lessons from Rinus Duin in her hometown of Abcoude. She attended the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, where she also took her first steps as a painter and draughtswoman. The landscape is an important theme in Harkema's work. Nowadays the artist lives and works in Amersfoort, but she still regularly returns to the area where she grew up, to sketch along the Gein and the Angstel river that flows a little further on.

About Anna Khodorovich
Anna Khodorovich (b. 1974), was born in Russia and has lived in Amsterdam since 2004. She was trained as a designer at the Moscow Drama Academy, but picked up the brush in the Netherlands. She was taught by Jim Harris and Sam Drukker, among others. Like Piet Mondrian did at the time, Khodorovich regularly leaves the busy capital behind to paint outdoors on the Gein River. Her landscapes are recognizable by their playful touch and distinctly lively use of color.

The watery world of Amersfoort
With this exhibition, the Mondrian House ties in with the theme The City and Water. In Amersfoort, where the Mondrian House is located, water plays an indispensable role. From the picturesque canals meandering through the old city center to the modern water artworks you encounter in surprising places, Amersfoort lives with and through water. Whether you are a lover of relaxing walks along the water, like to delve into the city's rich history or are just looking for refreshing activities for during the summer; Amersfoort offers it all. In addition to the Aan het Gein exhibition, there is much more to see and do in the city. The full program will be announced soon.
