Merchant's house purchased c. 1780 by Benjamin Cohen, tobacco merchant and banker. He had it remodeled in Louis XVI style. Rich interior with marble floors, stucco decorations on walls and ceilings, painted wallpaper and carvings in the form of tobacco leaves. Next to each door is a mezuzah (Jewish text box). The house had an older predecessor, shown in Matthias Withoos' large city view (1671). In the side facade above the windows is 17th-century masonry, "cockscombs.
The house with the purple panes is a beautiful monument in Louis XVI style, with a façade executed in natural stone. The building has a rich and authentic interior and is part of the convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Amersfoort. The complex also has a convent garden and a beautiful chapel.
The house with the Purple Diamonds is opened once a year and only with guided tours on Open Monument Day in September.
