As the Jewish community continued to expand, the space in the Bank van Leening became too small. Therefore, in 1726, a plot of land on Drieringensteeg was purchased, where a proper synagogue (a "shul") was built, consecrated in 1727.

The leadership of the Jewish community was in the hands of Abraham Italiaander, one of Amersfoort's leading tobacco merchants. He managed to get the Sephardim, who were now a strong minority, and the Ashkenazim to join together as one community in this shul. Over 100 years later, this synagogue also proved too small for the growing community. Therefore, the small square shul was enlarged in 1843, resulting in the synagogue as we know it today: a round back in the Muurhuizen, with the entrance in the extension on Drieringensteeg. At the time of its bicentennial in 1927, the synagogue was in need of a major restoration. The windows were decorated with Jewish symbols in art deco style by the Haarlem glazier Willem Bogtman.
