Jewish Cemetery
To bury their dead, the Sephardim (Jews whose ancestors came from Spain and Portugal) purchased a piece of land behind the Bloemendalse Gate in 1670. This cemetery is one of the five oldest Jewish cemeteries in the Netherlands. According to Jewish laws, graves may not be cleared; they are therefore eternal. During the Open Monument Days you may visit the cemetery, which is located opposite this original site.
Behind this wall are the people reburied from the first cemetery. No new deceased are interred at either site. For that, the cemetery on the Soesterweg is in use.
