Messiah | Nieuwe Philharmonie Utrecht
In the days before Christmas, conductor Johannes Leertouwer has been performing G.F. Handel's world-famous Messiah (1742) with choir and orchestra in the Netherlands for many years. What the St. Matthew Passion is to Easter, Messiah, with its famous Hallelujah, is to Christmas in the English-speaking part of the world.
Leertouwer is an innovative conductor, leading and inspiring from the first violin. He also positions the choir and soloists before the orchestra. This, he believes, brings Messiah's story of hope and expectation, of suffering and resurrection, and of the meaning of an afterlife, even closer to the audience.
With matchless solo arias and choruses, four soloists, a baroque orchestra and a choir of 12 singers offer comfort, strength and inspiration at the beginning of winter.
