Italy, late sixteenth century. In the courts, the arts flourish as never before. Master builders, visual artists and musicians were employed for the glory of the nobility. Italy, late sixteenth century. In the courts, the arts flourish as never before. Master builders, visual artists and musicians were employed for the glory of the nobility. Men and boys sang the most beautiful music ever written. In Ferrara, at the court of Count Alfonso d'Este, it was no different. But there was another sound: in secret - Musica Segreta - the unearthly, breathtaking voices of three virtuoso singers: TRE DONNE DI FERRARA.
Secret did not remain for long. Their virtuosity caused a stir and inspired great composers to create unique masterpieces. As feminists avant la lettre, the Tre Donne effortlessly conquered the civilized world. Until the death of Count Alfonso in 1597. His death also meant the end for the Tre Donne. Music once again belongs to the men. Women's voices are taken over by boys and eunuchs. The Tre Donne fall into oblivion.
Le Nuove Musiche brings these women back.
A theatrical concert where contemporary texts and ancient music meet. Three singers give voice to the women of past and present. Musicality and mentality expressed in a message that after more than 400 years is more topical than ever.
With music by Claudio Monteverdi, Nadia Boulanger, Clara Schumann and Stijn van der Loo, and with lyrics by Kiki Jaski.
A production of Le Nuove Musiche
