Aftersun

Take a look in advance

Ten-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) and her 30-year-old father Calum (Paul Mescal) are vacationing in a Turkish seaside resort. The vacation days are filled with pool, bathing and evening entertainment. Although the vacation seems to be amiable, there is palpable tension between father and daughter. Calum struggles with himself; he is often gloomy or cranky and drinks just a beer too much. Although he anxiously tries to keep this gloomy side of himself hidden from his daughter, it seems to overshadow the vacation. During the vacation, Sophie interviews her father with a camera recorder. Later, when Sophie herself turns 31, she revisits the videos. The images bring her back to the myriad but complex childhood memories of her father.

Aftersun is poignant and loose at the same time. The portrayal of the bond between Sophie and Calum captures the essence of life and love. "Every shot in Aftersun has been thought through. Yet it never feels like a frustrating puzzle. Going along with the melancholy is actually enough. Then don't be surprised when tears flow profusely during the credits." AD, Feb. 22, 2023.
