Amersfoort is all about "water" this year. Therefore the Guild offers the fascinating city walk "Amersfoort by the Sea?". A title with a wink, but the city was once really connected to the Zuiderzee via the Eem - and knew it. And in the future? Will Amersfoort end up by the sea if the sea level rises and we do nothing? The walk takes you through the historic city center with its beautiful monuments and canals, the fish market, the city's oldest harbor, past locks and weirs, and you visit the romantic watergate Monnikendam and the sturdy Koppelpoort, with its authentic medieval hoisting mechanism. Meanwhile, you'll hear stories about clean and dirty canals, beer brewing, cesspools, sewage, drinking water, the fire department and about "Monday wash day. The tour ends at museum Flehite, where you can visit the exhibition "The city and the water" on your own.
The tour is once a week, on Saturdays Sept. 7 and Thursday Sept. 12, and further Saturdays on 21/09, 28/09, 05/10, 12/10, 19/10, 26/10, 02/11, 09/11.
Start at OLV Churchyard. End: Museum Flehite (because of the exhibition; people can optionally visit the exhibition). Duration of walk: 1.5. Cost: €6 adults/€4 children 4 to 12 years.
