Tre Donne

Tre Donne tells the story of three virtuoso singers who around 1600 are given the freedom to perform in public at the court of Count Alfonso d'Este of Ferrara, completely against the mores of the time. However, with the death of Alfonso, female musical culture at court also dies. The three women, the "Tre Donne," are naturally replaced by men. This story takes us to other stories of strong women in music history.

Three singers, based on three late 16th-century virtuoso singers at the court of Ferrara, rewrite over 400 years of music history. Under the artistic direction of Krijn Koetsveld (music) and Kiki Jaski (direction), sopranos Jennifer van der Hart, Wendy Roobol and Janneke Stoute give voice to those women: the Tre Donne di Ferrara. With music by Claudio Monteverdi, Nadia Boulanger, Clara Schumann and others, and with new work written especially for this production by Stijn van der Loo.

Van der Loo wrote the music inspired by texts and personal stories of our own "Tre Donne" on stage, making the story current. In this production, feminism begins as early as 1600, but the historical story is still of this time.
