Lorca

With LORCA, Joost Omen and the Poezieboys bring the Surrealist play Het Publiek (Frederico García Lorca, 1929-1930) to our theater after great success at Oerol and De Parade. In this new adaptation, they reenact scenes from the play, recite poems, and in the meantime provide the whole event with introduction and afterword.

More than the performance of the late poet's work, LORCA is an ode to the elusiveness of poetry and freedom. LORCA is about love, about desire in all its absurdity, and above all: the need for new hospitality concepts.

Spanish poet Federico García Lorca is known for his brightly realistic plays such as Yerma and Blood Wedding. Much less known is that in the last months of his life, Lorca worked on the surrealist play: The Audience. Lorca wrote this play full of horses, a red nude, men with beards, an upside-down Christ, an inspector, a tambourine, a mother, a vine leaf and a snow shower of glacé gloves in deepest secrecy, somewhere on a ship between Cuba and Spain filled with homesickness and heartbreak.

Impossible could he have known that in a few years he would have to hide that piece at a friend's house because a civil war broke out. Impossible could he have known that no one knew how to play his strange piece after he was shot by fascists. Impossible could he have known that eighty-seven years later his play would become the starting point for a wild, poetic adventure to kick the dormant theater landscape in the teeth.
