93-year-old Thelma Post lives alone in Los Angeles. Her grandson Danny visits her often and cares for her. Although Thelma has a close relationship with Danny, she finds his constant help patronizing. She would rather he put more energy into his own life. Then she gets a call from "Danny" saying he has been arrested and needs money to be released. As instructed, Thelma sends $10,000 to a local address. However, she finds out that Danny is safe and that she has been scammed.

Because she gets no help from the police and is unwilling to let the crook get away with her money, Thelma takes action herself. Very much against her family's wishes. She enlists the help of Ben, an old friend. They ride Ben's 2-seater scooter to friend Mona's house to steal Mona's gun. This succeeds and they go hunting for the missing money. Actress June Squibb portrays the strong-willed Thelma with guts and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business at her age - despite what her daughter Gail, son-in-law Alan or grandson Danny believe.

Thelma is a young filmmaker's touching and funny tribute to the older generation. Director Josh Margolin's own grandmother was the inspiration for this film. She was ripped off over the phone in her old age, which made Margolin extremely angry. He wanted to explore her struggle for what is left of her autonomy and dramatized her story with the attributes of a genre that captures her powerful spirit and celebrates her perseverance and tenacity: the action film. A type of action hero was created that we rarely see. Thelma makes questionable choices in her action-packed journey, but her refusal to give up her independence or be a victim ultimately makes her as heroic as a younger man jumping from one roof to another.
