The Big Haay was founded by Mark Haayema. Mark is a writer, puppeteer and playwright in addition to being the artistic director of The Big Haay.

De Grote Haay makes visual surprising performances for the whole family. Mark created among others the performances Oma mag ik mijn pop terug?, Meneertje Meer, 1234 Poppetje van Papier, Johannes de Parkiet and Meester Kikker. As an actor and director he worked for Rotheater, Tg Winterberg, Percossa, the Residentie Orkest, PHION, Philzuid and Stage Entertainment. He also writes scenarios for Woezel&Pip, Pipo the Clown and songs for Kinderen voor Kinderen.

With Tg Winterberg won the Silver Cricket three times. In 2019, his picture book Johannes de Parkiet received a Flag & Pennant from the griffin jury and also became the core title of Children's Book Week. For Kinderen voor Kinderen he wrote several songs including:Becoming What You Want and Sorry. His picture book series Muk was in the picture book top 10 during the National Read Aloud Days. He won the Golden Poet Laureate for his poem Raisins.Mark starred in the TV series Sesame Street, Boterhamshow, PatsBoemKledder, Koekeloere and De Sprookjesboom. Mark translated the musical SHREK and wrote the script for musicals such as Meester Kikker and Hoe overleef ik alles wat ik niemand vertellen?
