Amersfoort is always beautiful, of course, but secretly even more beautiful in December. The city is full of twinkling lights and the shop windows are conjured up in the Christmas atmosphere. That makes our beautiful city even more magical.
Just walking around and enjoying Amersfoort is wonderful, but there are places to admire and things to do that are extra special right now. You just have to know where to find them. I take you on a wonderful winter walk through Amersfoort.
Lights in the city
Although almost everything is closed at night, walking through the city after dark is still a treat. Perhaps even more so because it is so quiet. Stroll undisturbed alone or hand-in-hand with your sweetheart through the city and take your time wandering from court to square by street and enjoy the beautiful Christmas lights.
Things have really unpacked again, resulting in beautiful pictures. No idea where to start? Use our photo route as a guide, it will take you along the most beautiful spots of our historic downtown.
Winter Wonderland
Whether you're in town at night or during the day, be sure to take a walk to Muurhuizen. Here you will find the cozy winter village that the Amersfoort-based Irma traditionally makes in her home.
Every year it is different and there is an awful lot to see. In front of the window is a bench inviting one to sit and admire for a while. Of course she hid Waldo somewhere in her winter village again. Do you spot him?
Discover the art and culture of Amersfoort
There are three routes (the fortress route, urban route and expedition route) that take you along the cultural parties and many beautiful places that our city has to offer.
Choose a route, walk, scan, listen and enjoy! Convenient; you can choose a booklet by mail or digital routes.
Route of Reconciliation
Amersfoort is full of history, but did you know that behind many of these stories there is also a dark side? The Route of Atonement tells you more about this often underexposed side of the story through historical relics in the streets.
Discover stories of inequality and exploitation between different races, walks of life. From, for example, the colonial past of Amersfoort resident Johan van Oldenbarnevelt to the more than 350 memorial stones scattered throughout the city in remembrance of the Jews, Gypsies and resistance fighters murdered or deported during WWII. Lesser-known stories are also highlighted, for example, about the class differences between Amersfoort farmers and city residents.
Deck the halls XXL
Do you really want to get into the Christmas spirit? In Soesterkwartier they have wonderfully decorated houses and illuminated streets. Perhaps the most beautiful in the country! Because I live there I am of course a bit biased. So decide for yourself and be sure to walk into the Soesterkwartier in December. This year there is again a bicycle route (also good to walk) along all the glitters, sparklers, lights and the exorbitant amount of Santa Clauses and snowmen.
Warm up during your city walk with a tasty coffee to go. Here you will find our famous Amersfoort Coffee Bucket List. Therefore we made a list full of delicious snacks, which you can also get to go at addresses throughout Amersfoort. Have fun walking in Amersfoort!
